41 murder indictments in 2013 Bangladesh clothing factory collapse

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 18 (UPI) -- A Dhaka, Bangladesh, court Monday indicted 41 people for murder in the 2013 collapse of a garment factory which killed more than 1,100 people.

Among those indicted were Sohel Rana, the owner of the building, and his parents. Rana and 34 other suspects appeared in court Monday, and each pleaded not guilty.

Police originally filed "death due to negligence" charges against 21 of the defendants, but later upgraded the charges to murder for all 41.

RAJUK, Dhaka's city development agency, filed another case against 13 people, including Rama, charging them with violating the country's building code.

The multi-storied Rama Plaza building in suburban Dhaka, housing several garment factories, collapsed on April, 24, 2013. The incident brought attention to unsafe working conditions in the Bangladeshi textile industry.

Bangladesh is the world's second-largest exporter, behind China, in ready-made garments, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
