The landslide, provoked by heavy rains in the Tawang district of the Himalayan state adjacent to China, flattened a camp of sleeping construction workers who were building a resort hotel. The incident occurred in a popular tourist destination at an altitude of 9,800 hundred feet. The National Disaster Response Force was sent to the scene by the Indian government.

Landslides are common in India but typically occur during monsoon season, from June to September.
