GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 8 (UPI) -- Gunmen ambushed a Jalisco state police convoy, killing at least 15 officers and wounding five others, in one of the deadliest attacks on Mexican law enforcement in years.
The ambush attack was believed to be carried out by the New Generation Jalisco Cartel, Jalisco's security commissioner, Alejandro Solorio Aréchiga, said. It is considered one of the largest and most dangerous drug cartels in Mexico.
The attack happened as a police convoy traveled to Guadalajara, the state capital. It is unclear if any of the assailants were killed or injured. The convoy was blocked by a burning vehicle, apparently placed by the attackers.
The attack was the biggest since 2010, when 10 federal police officers were killed in an attack blamed on the La Familia cartel.
The New Generation cartel has also been blamed in a March 19 shooting that left five police officers dead.
