MENLO PARK , Calif., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook, announced a $25 million donation Tuesday to fight the Ebola virus outbreak.

The donation will be made to Atlanta's Centers for Disease Control Foundation in the name of Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla. Zuckerberg, 30, whose fortune is estimated at $32 billion, made the announcement on his Facebook social media page.

"We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn't spread further and become a long term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio. We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome."

The CDC refers to the 2014 Ebola outbreak as the largest in history. Over 4,000 people have died, and the World Health Organization and other health agencies have predicted its rapid spread if not contained.
