Extended family members of Pope Francis killed in car crash

Three members of Pope Francis' extended family were killed in a car crash on Tuesday in Argentina.

BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Three relatives of Pope Francis were killed Tuesday when his nephew's car crashed into a truck on a highway in Cordoba, Argentina.

Emanuel Bergoglio was driving with his family after midnight when the Bergoglio's car struck a truck. His wife, Valeria Carmona, 36, and children Jose, 8 months, and Antonio, 2, were killed in the crash. Emanuel was critically injured and taken to a hospital in Cordoba.

"The Pope has been informed of the tragic accident that took place in Argentina involving some of his family members," Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi said, noting the Holy Father is "profoundly saddened" by the news.

Fr. Lombardi conveyed a message from the pope, asking "all those who share in his grief join with him in prayer."
