Police use tear gas to block World Cup protesters from stadium

Tear gas was fired at an anti-World Cup protest group attempting to enter the stadium where the World Cup opening match was scheduled to be played Thursday afternoon. One person was arrested.

SAO PAULO, June 12 (UPI) -- Brazilian police used tear gas on Thursday to block a small group of World Cup protesters from making their way to Corinthians Stadium in Sao Paulo.

The protesters reportedly planned to stage an anti-World Cup demonstration at the stadium where the opening match was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

At least one person was arrested.

Many Brazilians are angered that the government invested $15 billion, drawn mostly from public funds, in the soccer tournament. Anti-World Cup protesters argue that the billions should instead have been invested in social projects, including housing and salary increases for public servants.
