In search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, aircraft detects another signal

The chief coordinator for Australia's Joint Agency Coordination Center announced that during Thursday's search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, one aircraft "detected a possible signal in the vicinity of the Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield." The Ocean Shield has U.S. Navy equipment aboard to locate the black box transponder and a submersible to explore beneath the ocean.

PERTH, Australia, April 10 (UPI) -- Australian officials announced Thursday evening that another signal has been detected in the now-reduced search area for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370's black box transponder.

10 military aircraft, four civilian aircraft, and 13 ships combed a 57,923 square kilometer area of the Indian Ocean throughout the day.

Angus Houston, the chief coordinator for Australia's Joint Agency Coordination Center and retired Air Chief Marshal, announced Thursday evening: "whilst conducting an acoustic search this afternoon a RAAF AP-3C Orion aircraft has detected a possible signal in the vicinity of the Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield." The Ocean Shield has U.S. Navy equipment aboard to locate the black box transponder and a submersible to explore beneath the ocean

Houston noted that the acoustic data would be analyzed overnight.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
