NASSAU , Bahamas, April 3 (UPI) -- Officials in Nassau, Bahamas, said over $1.2 million in suspected marijuana was found aboard a speedboat in waters near Bahama’s Andros Island.

Drug Enforcement Unit officers searched the 30-foot vessel Wednesday and found coolers and sacks of marijuana. Three unidentified Bahamian men -- ages 45, 40 and 34 -- were arrested.

Unit Superintendent Samuel Butler said the men attempted to ram their boat into the police vessel as it approached, adding, “We are always concerned about that kind of resistance … (but) we were still able to intercept them.”

Butler noted police believe the suspects imported the marijuana from Jamaica.

The confiscated drugs weighed over 1,200 pounds.

The seizure and arrests came a week after nearly $17 million of marijuana plants were found growing in a field on East Grand Bahama island. The discovery was made by forces working with officers of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

“Our collaborations…are definitely in high gear, and that’s why you are seeing the amount of successes in terms of drug interdictions,” Butler said.
