Woman sentenced after pesticide causes deaths of 2 million bees

BIECZ, Poland, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A woman was sentenced to four months in prison in the deaths of about 2 million bees in a failed pest control operation in Poland, court officials said.

The woman, identified only as Joanna S., used a pesticide not approved by the Ministry of Health to cull a local mosquito population after flooding in and around the southern Polish town of Biecz in 2010. After she completed the operation, beekeepers noticed as many as 358 bee colonies, comprising more than 2 million bees, the Polish News Agency reported Friday.

Lucjan Furmanek, chairman of the Biecz Beekeepers' Association, welcomed the verdict after a three-year fight to bring the case to court.

"I hope this judgment will prevent any further mindless devastation of the environment," Furmanek said.
