Merchant's slaying sparks protest in Sudan

EL-OBEID, Sudan, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Protests broke out in the city of El-Obeid, Sudan, after a merchant was killed by pro-government Arab Janjaweed militia members, officials said.

Dozens of demonstrators marched through El-Obeid Sunday after merchant Mahmoud Issa al-Dahawi's death, calling for retribution, the Sudan Tribune reported.

North Kordofan state Gov. Ahmed Haroun promised to drive the militias out of the state and take steps to assure such incidents don't happen again.

Residents of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, say anti-government militias have repeatedly attacked merchants and shop owners. The residents blame the government for failing to stop the attacks.
