VATICAN CITY, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A man is in critical condition after lighting himself on fire in Vatican City's St. Peter's Square Thursday, authorities said.
The 51-year-old man doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

A Jesuit priest was the first person to try to help the man and soon after two police officers arrived and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.
The man's motives for the self-immolation were not immediately determined, police said.
