Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis announces he will resign

RIGA, Latvia, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, stung by the supermarket roof collapse that killed 54 people last week, announced Wednesday he will resign.

Dombrovskis made public his decision after he met with President Andris Berzins, the Latvian news agency LETA reported.

Dombrovskis said the country needs a government that will be supported by a majority of lawmakers and also be able resolve the issues Latvia faces.

The initial and secondary roof collapses happened Thursday in the Zolitude neighborhood of the Latvian capital, with a final roof section falling Saturday. At least 54 people died, but officials said the death toll may rise because seven people remain missing.

LETA said the roof collapse was the largest loss of life since Latvia gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991.
