Latvians set 3-day mourning period for roof collapse victims

RIGA, Latvia, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Latvia's prime minister has announced a three-day mourning period for 52 civilians and rescue workers who died in the collapse of a supermarket roof in Riga.

After a second night of picking through the rubble of the Maxima market, rescuers said they found no more survivors, the BBC reported Saturday.

In announcing the mourning period, which began Saturday, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis said "in our thoughts we are together will all those stricken by this tragedy."

Mourners gathered at the scene, laying flowers and lighting candles.

A section of the store's roof collapsed Thursday night. A second section collapsed about 20 minutes later, trapping rescue workers.

Three firefighters were among the dead.

Viktorija Sembele, a spokeswoman for the Rescue Service, said about 6,500 square feet of the store had not yet been searched.
