Latvian supermarket death toll at 47; chances dim for survivors

RIGA, Latvia, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- The death toll from the collapse of a roof at a supermarket in Riga, Latvia, has risen to 47, officials said late Friday afternoon.

Six of the dead have not yet been identified, the LETA news agency reported.

Police have reviewed surveillance video inside the Maxima store to determine the most likely areas where victims could be found after the roof caved in Thursday.

The chances of finding anyone else alive in the rubble are becoming increasingly less possible, said Inga Vetere, a government spokeswoman.

Viktorija Sembele, a spokeswoman for Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service, said at least three of the dead were firefighters who were caught in a secondary collapse during the rescue effort, The New York Times reported.

Officials said the first collapse was about 5:45 p.m. local time when the store was crowded with shoppers.

Local media said the weight of soil from a rooftop garden installation may have contributed to the first collapse. Officials said they were looking into possible construction code violations.

LETA said the roof collapse caused the largest loss of life since the country gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. On Feb. 23, 2007, a fire engulfed a nursing home building in Alsunga, killing 26 people.
