North Korea agrees to Kaesong committee talks

SEOUL, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- North Korea Friday agreed to participate in talks with South Korea on the competitiveness of their joint Kaesong Industrial Complex.

The two countries will hold three subcommittee meetings Wednesday and Thursday, Yonhap news agency reported.

"The North proposed talks on three sub-panels related to investment protection, internationalization and rules governing people staying in Kaesong," an official said. "The North said it will contact the South on a separate date for the travel and communication sub-panel meeting."

The investment and internationalization panels will meet Wednesday and the panel on enhancing workers' rights will be held Thursday, the official said.

Seoul urged the North to commit to the meetings on Wednesday, as under an agreement reached Aug. 28, both sides are obligated to hold monthly meetings on the industrial complex. Pyongyang boycotted the October meeting.

The Kaesong Industrial Complex, which houses 123 South Korean companies, was shut down for four months after the North pulled out all of its workers in April, citing military and political provocations by the South.
