Police chief promises weekly roundups of immigrants in Moscow

MOSCOW, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Moscow's police chief has promised weekly roundups of alleged illegal immigrants as Russian nationalists pressure the government on the issue.

Police detained 675 people Friday, RIA Novosti reported. Police Chief Anatoly Yakunin said the raids would be repeated every week.

Anger at immigration came to a head last weekend after a man was stabbed and killed in a Moscow suburb, allegedly by an immigrant from Azerbaijan. On Sunday, a mob attacked a vegetable market in the area where many immigrants were believed to work.

While police halted the attack on the market, officers raided it Monday and detained more than 1,000 people. Sanitation officials also inspected it and shut it down.

A suspect was arrested in the killing this week.
