Bail denied for Britons charged in Greenpeace piracy case

MURMANSK, Russia, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A Russian court on Friday rejected a bail request appeal for two Britons are charged with piracy stemming from a Greenpeace protest in the Arctic last month.

U.K. nationals Philip Ball and Kieron Bryan and 28 other Greenpeace protesters were arrested Sept. 19 after several activists tried to scale the side of an oil rig in the Pechora Sea, RIA Novosti reported.

Russian border guards seized the Greenpeace ship, arrested all those on board and charged them with piracy.

All of the crew members have made appeals for either house arrest or bail.

A court Tuesday rejected bail appeals by photographer Denis Sinyakov, ship doctor Yekaterina Zaspa and Greenpeace spokesman Andrei Allakhverdov.

If convicted, each member of the crew faces a possible 15 years in prison.
