Police response to Raajje TV's protection request is investigated

MALE, Maldives, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The Police Integrity Commission said it has launched an investigation into the failure of authorities to protect a TV station in Maldives from an arson attack.

The Raajje TV station requested protection Monday as unrest in the county intensified in reaction to the first round of presidential elections. But police did not report to the building, Haveeru Online reported.

Chief Superintendent Abdulla Nawaz said that he did not have enough police personnel to station officers there due to the political tension in the capital.

The station was set on fire Monday morning.

Security video shows six men breaking the lock of a door and then dousing gasoline on the computers.

The station owner estimated that the damages were more than $1 million.
