Animal activists call for end to bull fights in Spain

TORDESILLAS, Spain, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Animal rights activists in Spain have submitted a petition to lawmakers with 85,000 signatures, seeking to put an end to the Toro de la Vega bull fights.

The Toro de la Vega, which is one of the move violent annual bull fights in Spain, took place Tuesday in the village of Tordesillas, despite 15,000 people protesting against the event in Madrid, thinkSPAIN reported.

Silvia Barcelo, head of Spain's Pro-Animal Party, which does not currently hold any parliamentary seats, expressed "deep disappointment and discontent" that bulls continued to be "lynched and executed with spears for entertainment purposes" in Spain.

Barcelo called on leaders of the main PP and PSOE parties to "listen to the clamoring of the people" and review legislation "which permits such barbaric actions."
