British TV broadcaster charged with child abuse dating to 1960

LONDON, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A British television broadcaster and entertainer was charged Thursday with attacking two teenage girls and making indecent images of a child, officials said.

Rolf Harris, 83, faces nine counts of indecent assault dating back three decades and four counts of making indecent images in 2012, The Independent reported.

Harris, who has been honored three times by Queen Elizabeth II, was arrested in November but police did not reveal his identity until April.

Alison Saunders of the Crown Prosecution Service said charges were filed after prosecutors agreed there was enough evidence for a conviction and it was in the public interest for Harris to be charged.

The indecent assault charges involve girls 14- and 15 years old and date from 1980 to 1986, Saunders said.

The Australian-born performer had his first musical hit in 1960 with "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport." He painted a portrait of the queen in 2005 and performed at her Diamond Jubilee last year.
