Ontario police welcome expanded use of stun guns

OTTAWA, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Police in Ontario say they welcome the province's decision to allow police forces to develop their own rules regarding the use of stun guns.

The reversal in policy was announced Tuesday by Ontario Community Safety Minister Madeleine Meilleur.

Prior to the announcement, the province restricted the use of stun guns to a select few supervising and tactical officers. Police chiefs have advocated expanded use of the weapons for years, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. noted.

In the city of Ottawa, the weapons have been in use "for several years and are currently issued to all front-line supervisors on patrol and on the Ottawa Police Service tactical unit," Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau said in a statement.
