German law allows child's sex to be listed as 'blank'

BERLIN, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- German parents will soon have the option of selecting "blank" as the sex on their children's birth certificates, a report says.

The law, which goes into effect in November, allows children born with traits of both sexes to determine later in life with what sex they identify, Der Spiegel reported Friday.

Germany is the first country in Europe to introduce the option of an indeterminate sex. How the change will affect other legal documents in the country is unclear. Passports, for instance, require the person be identified as male or female.

The law puts Germany in the forefront of efforts by the European Union to coordinate anti-discrimination laws throughout its member states.

An 2012 EU report found discrimination against transgender and intersex people was still "rampant."

Silvan Agias, co-author of the report, predicted "Germany's move will put more pressure on Brussels. That can only be a good thing."
