Russian man allegedly beat elderly woman to death with frying pan

MOSCOW, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Police in western Russia said they arrested a man who allegedly beat an elderly woman to death with a frying pan in order to steal $12.

The suspect entered the house of the 83-year-old retiree last month and demanded money, police told Russia's RIA Novosti news service.

"The retiree refused to hand over her savings to the offender, after which he started beating her about the head and body with a frying pan and a crutch," the Investigative Committee said.

When the victim fell down and could not resist, the suspect took $12 from her and fled the scene.

The woman's nephew found her and she was taken to the hospital, where she died several days later, authorities said.

The suspect, whose name was not released, faces several criminal charges, including willfully causing grievous bodily harm, which carries a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison, RIA Novosti said.
