Men sentenced in toxic teething medicine case

LAGOS, Nigeria, May 17 (UPI) -- Two Nigerians on Friday were sentenced to seven years in prison for producing a teething medicine that resulted in the deaths of at least 80 children.

Abiodun Adeyemo and Ebele Austine Eromosele, who worked for a company that made My Pikin syrup, were found guilty by a court in Lagos, PM News reported.

Justice Okechukwu Okeke of a Federal High Court also ordered the pharmaceutical company, Barewa Pharmaceutical Company Limited, be closed and all its assets be handed over to the federal government.

The defendants were charged in 2009 with six counts each of conspiracy to produce an adulterated drug, My Pikin baby teething mixture.

The teething medicine has been linked to the deaths of at least 80 children since 2008.
