Parsons funeral draws mourners as bullying investigation moves ahead

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, April 13 (UPI) -- Mourners gathered Saturday to bury a Canadian teen who killed herself after enduring months of bullying after alleging she had been raped.

Angella Parsons said her daughter, Reteah Parsons, 17, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was sexually assaulted by four boys at a party in November 2011. A photo of the alleged incident was circulated around Parsons' high school and on social media.

After enduring nearly 18 months of harassment, Parsons took her own life, her mother said.

Despite the tragedy, Angella Parsons thanked people for the outpouring of support, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.

"The family has been recipients of random acts of kindness from people who we don't even know," she said. "The support has been overwhelming, a true testament of the beauty of humanity."

Despite photographic evidence, Canadian police have never charged the alleged rapists.

With the public outcry reaching a fever pitch, Royal Canadian Mounted Police officials said they would reopen the case and a witness has come forward with significant new evidence -- though investigators wouldn't say what it is.
