Executions to resume in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, March 31 (UPI) -- Kuwaiti security sources said three people have been scheduled for execution, ending Kuwait's six-year moratorium on capital punishment.

A Pakistani, a Saudi and a stateless resident are slated for execution Monday at the central prison in Kuwait City, the Manama, Bahrain Gulf News reported Sunday.

The Pakistani was sentenced to death for killing a Kuwaiti couple. The Saudi was found guilty of killing his friend. The Bidoon (stateless resident) was sentenced to capital punishment for murdering his wife and their children. He said he killed them under orders from the Awaited Mahdi, the prophesied redeemer in Islam, the Gulf News reported.

Security sources told newspapers journalists can cover the executions but said rumors the executions would be broadcast were "baseless," the Gulf News reported.

Several death sentences have been imposed in the past six years but none have been carried out, the Gulf News said.
