Indian bus crash kills 37 people

MUMBAI, March 19 (UPI) -- An Indian passenger bus traveling to Mumbai from Goa plunged into a river early Tuesday, killing at least 37 people and injuring seven others, police said.

The Press Trust of India news agency, quoting authorities, said the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle at a steep turn, causing it to fall 40 feet into the Jagbudi River in Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra state.

The report said rescuers recovered the bodies of the 37 dead passengers, while the injured, including the bus driver, were taken to a local hospital.

CNN-IBN television reported five of the injured were listed in critical condition. The report said police were detaining the injured bus driver.
