British soldier killed in Cyprus bar fight

AYIA NAPA, Cyprus, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A weekend altercation in a Cyprus bar with a trio of tourists resulted in a British soldier being stabbed to death, Cypriot police said.

Three soldiers stationed on the island got into a scuffle for some reason with three tourists who were identified as British citizens of Pakistani descent, police told the online newspaper Famagusta Gazette.

The identity of the victim was not released. He was said to be a 19-year-old member of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

The pre-dawn incident took place in Ayipa Napa at a club that was off limits to British troops since an outbreak of alcohol-fueled violence in the 1990s, the Gazette said.
