Swedes in Belarus to keep low profile

MINSK, Belarus, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The Swedish Embassy in Minsk, Belarus, has received anonymous threats, prompting an advisory to Swedish nationals in Belarus, officials said.

"The Swedish Embassy has received threats against Swedish citizens currently in Belarus," read a statement posted on the embassy's Web site. "Due to recent events, including the expulsion of the Swedish Ambassador in Belarus, there are grounds for Swedes to be particularly careful and cautious when traveling and staying in the country."

The embassy goes on to advise Swedes to keep a low profile and avoid displaying Swedish national symbols.

RIA Novosti reported tensions have been high between the two countries since last month, when a plane hired by a Swedish organization dropped hundreds of teddy bears bearing pro-democracy messages over Belarus. The former Soviet republic retaliated by expelling Swedish diplomats from Minsk.

Belarus has also withdrawn its diplomats and all embassy staff from Stockholm.
