11 killed in Baghdad-area bombings

BAGHDAD, June 27 (UPI) -- Eleven people were killed Wednesday in two bombings of houses in the Baghdad area, officials said, bringing the death toll for June in Iraq to around 180.

The first bombing occurred in al-Wahda, about 12 miles southeast of the Iraqi capital, CNN reported. Police said a small bomb went off in a house, followed by a larger one that detonated as neighbors arrived to help.

At least eight people were killed by the second blast.

Another bombing in western Baghdad killed three women and injured two other people, officials said.

Insurgent and sectarian attacks peaked between 2005 and 2007 in Iraq and have since dropped off. But the country remains a violent place, with 132 deaths reported in May.

On June 13, a bomb aimed at Shiite pilgrims on their way to a shrine in Baghdad left 93 dead. That was the highest daily toll since the United States officially pulled out in December.

CNN estimated that a total of 180 people have been killed so far in June, many of them Shiites.
