Pakistani pop star killed in drive-by

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, June 19 (UPI) -- Famed Pakistani pop singer Ghazala Javed was killed in a drive-by shooting in northwest Pakistan, police said.

CNN reported Javed was leaving a hair salon Monday night with her father when their vehicle was sprayed with gunfire from assailants on motorcycles. She was hit with six bullets. She and her father were later pronounced dead at a hospital in Peshawar.

Javed made headlines last year when she asked her husband for a divorce after finding out he had at least one other wife. In Pakistan's male-dominated and heavily conservative society, a woman desiring a divorce is seen to be dishonoring her husband.

Javed also skirts the Taliban moratorium against singing and dancing, recording her latest popular Pashto songs and videos in nearby Dubai.

Authorities said Taliban involvement is not suspected. Police have named Javed's ex-husband as a suspect.
