Dubai: Student stands trial over rape

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, May 22 (UPI) -- A 20-year-old student in Dubai stood in the dock this week in the Emirati Court of First Instance charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old schoolboy.

Official court records established the defendant already had a criminal record prior to the charge of assault on similar acts of violence.

The prosecution stated in court Sunday the attacker "lured the victim, his compatriot, into his bedroom and made him forcefully swallow a drug. Later, he assaulted the teen after threatening him with a knife. He also filmed the assault and blackmailed the teen saying he would circulate the video if he told his parents."

The assault took place in October 2011.

The report of the General Directorate of Criminal Evidence confirmed DNA obtained from semen stains found on the teen matched with the defendant's genetic material.

The defendant could face the death penalty if found guilty, a United Arab Emitates judge told the Islam Times newspaper Monday.
