Hillary Clinton in India for 3-day visit

NEW DELHI, May 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in India Sunday for a three-day visit that will include a meeting with the prime minister, officials said.

Clinton and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will confer in New Delhi Monday evening and a roster of government officials and political leaders afterward.

The ANI news agency said Clinton was expected to focus on the strategic aspects of India's relationship with the United States.

A senior White House official told Press Trust India that Clinton's visit was not intended to send any kind of message to India's neighbor, China, and was focused on issues such as the future of Afghanistan and the integration of southern and central Asia, which would include India's longtime rival Pakistan.

"Obviously that by itself would benefit both countries, to the extent that they can help open up the trade routes from central Asia to Afghanistan and India, which that would have an enormously positive impact on the whole region," the anonymous official said.
