Suspected Taliban attack kills officer

KISHAM, Afghanistan, April 5 (UPI) -- Police say Nazik Mir, a prominent anti-Taliban commander, was killed in what they suspect was a Taliban suicide attack in the Afghan province of Badakhshan.

Mir, a police commander, died in a suicide bombing in the Kisham district of Badakhshan Wednesday. The explosion killed one other person and injured 16 civilians, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. The BBC said Mir was one of the Taliban's biggest enemies in the area, managing to halt Taliban operations in the province.
