Oil field bombed in South Sudan

BENTIU, South Sudan, March 27 (UPI) -- Sudanese Armed Forces bombed oil fields in South Sudan's Unity State Tuesday, the oil firm GNPOC said.

The action could spell a return to full-scale war between the two countries, the Sudan Tribune reported.

It follows by one day the eruption of clashes around the oil-rich town of Heglig in central Sudan near the South Sudan border.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir announced Monday South Sudanese soldiers had taken over Heglig and said the escalation was provoked by Sudan.

Unity State Information Minister Gideon Gatpan Thoar said the clashes in Heglig began when Sudanese troops attacked a junction between the Heglig oilfrields and Pariang County in South Sudan.

The escalation prompted the Sudanese government to cancel a scheduled summit April 3 between President Omer Hassan al-Bashir and Kiir.
