Israel to act against U.N. body

JERUSALEM, March 25 (UPI) -- Israel will consider withdrawing its membership from the United Nations Human Rights Council, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Sunday.

Lieberman, in Singapore, told Israel Radio the U.N. group was "bigoted" and "one-sided," and said Israel will consider what measures to take, including withdrawing its membership.

His comments were in response to a decision by the council to establish a committee to investigate Israel's settlements policy and the effect it has had on West Bank Palestinians.

Israel will bar the members of the investigating committee from entering the country, Lieberman's deputy, Danny Ayalon, told the broadcaster.

Punitive measures may also be taken against the Palestinian Authority to convey the message it cannot enjoy gestures made by Israel and at the same time act against it in international bodies, Ayalon said.

"We have many resources but we will act with discretion and will not shoot from the hip," he told the broadcaster.

Other measures may include delaying the transfer of tax revenues to the Palestinians or freezing joint economic ventures, Israel Radio speculated.
