Ten severed heads found in Mexico

TELOLOAPAN, Mexico, March 19 (UPI) -- Ten severed heads were found lined up on a sidewalk in a southern Mexico community this weekend, authorities said.

The gruesome discovery was reported Sunday morning near government buildings in Teloloapan in the state of Guerrero, the state attorney general's office said.

Each head was contained in a bag, and three appeared to be those of women, the Mexico City newspaper El Universal reported Monday.

State police and agents of the Preventive Ministerial Council cordoned off the area, and police and Mexican army personnel began a search of the area.

The bodies of the 10 victims had not been located, the newspaper said.

It wasn't reported who was suspected to be responsible for the grisly slayings, but Mexico has been in the throes of drug cartel-fueled violence for years. Organized crime was blamed for four other weekend slayings in Ensenada, Baja California, and five homicides recorded in Torreon, Coahuila state.
