HAVANA, March 19 (UPI) -- Havana's "Ladies in White," whose silent protests call attention to arrested Cuban dissidents, were detained by authorities, a group member said.
The women, who march from a Havana church to their homes every Sunday, were stopped by state security agents after mass Sunday. The 22 marchers were ordered into cars and vans, and taken to a police station for questioning, said Katia Sonia, a group member.
All were released, but 52 other women, including leader Bertha Soler, did not arrive at the church service and were believed to be detained on their way, Sonia said.
The group is comprised of relatives of jailed and missing Cuban dissidents. It has requested an audience with Pope Benedict XVI, thus far not granted by Cuba's Catholic Church, when he visits the island at the end of March, CNN reported Monday.
