MANAMA, Bahrain, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Six Americans were deported from Bahrain after authorities said they participated in a protest.

Bahraini immigration officials said Tuesday the Americans lied on their visa applications, saying they had come to the country for tourism but participated in a protest last week, Bikyamasr.com reported.

The Americans were arrested after allegedly participating in the protest, but no charges were filed and they agreed to leave.

The Shiite majority in Bahrain has protested since Feb. 14, 2011, against the Sunni majority, demanding equal rights and freedoms. The Sunni majority is backed by Saudi Arabia.
