GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A 10-year-old girl was seriously wounded Monday when she was stabbed in the throat outside a school in Gothenburg, Sweden, police said.

Gothenburg police spokesperson Bjor Blixter said the girl was conscious and told law enforcement officials she never saw her assailant before he attacked her with a knife, Swedish news agency TT reported.

"We've been able to talk to her. There's nothing to indicate that the injuries are life threatening, but she's still seriously wounded," Blixter told Expressen newspaper.

Police said the girl was taken to the hospital with the knife still stuck in her throat.

Police were speaking to family members and friends, hoping to determine a motive in the attack, Blixter said.
