Men with rebel links found guilty

KIGALI, Rwanda, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Twenty-two people charged with terrorism, murder and disrupting state security for a series of grenade attacks around Rwanda, have been found guilty.

Those convicted include former soldiers linked to Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the BBC reported Friday.

In their defense, some said they wanted to force negotiations between the government and the rebels.

Some rebel leaders have been accused of having ties to the 1994 genocide during which some 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus were killed during 100 days of violence brought on by ethnic Hutu extremists.

Of the 30 people charged in the trial, eight were acquitted, 10 received life sentences and the remaining 12 got lesser sentences.

Prosecutors sought life sentences for 24 of those tried.
