Iran denies shipping weapons to Syria

ANKARA, Turkey, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The Iranian government issued a formal denial Friday weapons are being sent to Syria by truck through Turkey.

The statement from the Iranian embassy in Ankara came after Turkish officials said four trucks had been stopped for inspection, CNN reported. The trucks were intercepted at Turkey's border with Syria.

"We deny such claims and we would like to state that the Islamic Republic of Iran sees people's demands to be paid attention to as a way of providing domestic security and stability and believes that dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition is the way out from the current situation," the statement said.

Selcuk Unal, a spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, said the trucks and their contents were being examined. He released no information about their cargo.
