Cold, snow, high winds hit Greece

ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A cold snap, snow and high winds hit several parts of Greece Wednesday, officials said.

Snow in the northern suburbs of Attica led authorities to urge motorists to use snow chains on roads in Dionysos, parts of Pendeli and Parnitha, Ekathimerini reported.

Sleet fell in other areas, including Kiffisia.

Strong winds on the sea forced ferries to return to the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio and to cancel scheduled departures.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service said conditions were expected to improve Thursday and temperatures would rise by Friday.
