Explosion kills at least 8 in China

BEIJING, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- An explosion at a fast-food restaurant Monday in northwestern China's Shaanxi province killed at least eight people and injured 31 others, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation of the morning explosion at the restaurant in Xi'an, the provincial capital, showed it was caused by a liquefied petroleum gas leak, a city official told Xinhua news agency.

Those injured were hospitalized, the news agency said.

A witness told Xinhua most of the victims were pedestrians, including children on their way to school.

Of those injured in the explosion, seven were in critical condition, the municipal health bureau said.

The explosion also damaged several cars and shattered windows. The restaurant is on the first floor of a commercial building in the capital's Gaoxin district.
