Aquino agrees to bring in foreign doctors

MANILA, Philippines, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Philippines President Benigno Aquino says he will fly in medical specialists to treat former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is not allowed to travel.

Aquino said he wants to see Arroyo recover from her current health issues but agrees with a court's decision to deny a request to lift travel restraints against the former president, who faces a number of criminal charges, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Wednesday.

Arroyo and her husband, Mike, had filed separate petitions asking the Supreme Court to remove travel restrictions put in place because of their alleged links to fraud in the 2007 elections. The court denied the bids.

The couple's attorney said Arroyo wishes to seek treatment abroad for hypoparathyroidism and a metabolic bone disorder.

Aquino said the government is willing to bring in doctors from anywhere in the world to treat Arroyo, and if necessary will cover the financial costs, the newspaper reported.
