Runner dies at Toronto marathon

TORONTO, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A 27-year-old runner died Sunday after he collapsed near the finish line of the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon in Toronto, officials said.

City police Staff Sgt. John Boyce told the Toronto Star it "appears he was running in the race" because he was wearing a tag with a number on it.

The man's identity had not been released and officials said they had not determined the cause of death, the newspaper said.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported marathon medical director Bruce Minnes said the man had no vital signs when he was taken from the course about 300 yards from the finish line about 11:15 a.m. EDT.

"The individual received an immediate response from a bystander who initiated CPR with Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon's first response units, two EMS crews and 911 response attending within moments," Minnes said in a release.

About 22,000 people took part in the day's three races, a marathon, half-marathon and 5-kilometer run.
