Taliban leader killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- NATO-led forces in Afghanistan say Taliban leader Qari Tahir and an associate were killed in a precision airstrike in the Sayyidabad district.

Tahir, who was spotted by security forces in a dry riverbed, was the top leader in Tangi Valley and the target of an operation last month in which 30 troops died when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed, the International Security Assistance Force said Thursday in a release.

ISAF said Tahir coordinated ambush attacks against Afghan forces and led fighters under his control to conduct hijackings of convoy vehicles.

"He led a group of insurgent fighters throughout the valley and was known to use roadside bombs and rockets to intimidate the local populace," ISAF said.
