Alleged adulteress kills self, 2 children

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- A Bangladeshi woman who killed herself and two of her children did so because she had been declared an outcast for adultery, investigators said Tuesday.

The High Court ordered nine people, including the local police chief, to answer questions about Ferdousi Akhter's murder-suicide, BDNews24.com reported. The 35-year-old woman jumped in front of a train Monday with her four children in the Madhabpur district.

Two of the children were hospitalized with severe injuries.

Akhter, whose husband is working in Saudi Arabia, had allegedly been called before a local tribunal on what were described as adultery charges based on thin evidence. She was declared an outcast.

The High Court banned local proceedings on July 31 after two women were tortured in Rangpur.
