LONDON, June 11 (UPI) -- Queen Elizabeth II of Britain honored her husband, Prince Philip, on his 90th birthday Friday by creating him lord high admiral of the Royal Navy.

The honorary title had been held by the queen, the Daily Mirror reported.

Philip, the duke of Edinburgh, was a naval officer for more than a decade, seeing action in the Mediterranean during World War II. He retired with the rank of commander in 1952 when his wife became queen.

The Royal National Institute for the Deaf presented the prince with a set of ear protectors to wear while hunting. Philip, a longtime patron, hosted the charity's 100th anniversary celebration Friday at Buckingham Palace.
