Tornadoes, winds rip northern Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 5 (UPI) -- One person was injured and thousands were waiting for power to be restored after tornadoes and strong winds ripped across northern Sweden, officials said.

"The number of fallen trees is probably the worst I've experienced in several years," Zakarias Juto, a traffic controller at the Swedish Transport Administration told the Swedish news agency TT.

The man injured in Vasterbotten province Saturday was in intensive care at a hospital. He was hurt when a tree fell on him.

Officials said about 15,000 people were without power Sunday in Vasterbotten and Norrbotten.

"In some areas our power lines are heavily damaged," Roger Lindmark, an information officer at Vattenfall, the utility provider, told TT. "Poles have been tumbled over and trees have fallen on lines."

Tornadoes in connection with thunderstorms are not unheard of in Sweden, the meteorological institute SMHI said.

"Several cases are observed every year, especially in the summer," said Linnea Rehn, a meteorologist at SMHI.
